5° WMRA Youth Challenge (16 - 17 years old)
International Mountain Running Youth Race

It is the only international mountain running event for young people. The event was created in 2004,
organised first at Pian del Frais and then, from 2005 to 2008, on the hills of Susa, by the local team
of Atletica Susa.
Created in memory of Marco Germanetto, several times winner of the Italian youth championships,
who died in 1999, the Challenge has grown over the years, becoming one of five WMRA Major

The “9th Marco Germanetto Memorial”, a sports event dedicated to the memory of the young Italian
long-distance runner (Italian Champion and National Team member) tragically deceased in
September 1999 at 18, in a car crash, will take place in Susa (Turin), on 22nd June 2008.
While the previous four editions revived the classic Susa-Moncenisio relay race to pass on the legacy of the Susa-born athlete, since 2004 Atletica Susa, Marco’s team, proposed a new formula, especially dedicated to the younger runners, so that Marco’s memory could also become a positive example. A change of direction met with great success, both in terms of athletes’ and audience participation, and greeted by wide approval.
Thus, in 2007 too the “Marco Germanetto Memorial” will be an international young people’s mountain running race, encompassing 300 participants from 8 to 17-years-olds, with the best Piemontese and Italian runners up against same-age athletes from several countries.
In 2006, seven national teams raced on the mountain tracks and meadows of the beautiful Villa San Pietro park, in Susa’s city heart. Atletica Susa’s commitment for 2007’s edition, strongly supported both from WMRA (World Mountain Running Association) and FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation), is to develop the Memorial even further, with a growing number of participating countries and more collateral events, such as a concert on the competition’s Saturday night, a huge success during 2006’s edition.
The Organising Committee will devolve the participation fees to one or more projects based at the “Rural Training Centre” in Nanyuki, Kenya, dedicated to Marco Germanetto’s memory.
